SCIENCE AND MATH
FIRST LEGO LEAGUE
Re-launched this year after four years, Lego League is a STEM program where teams of 4th and 5th graders (formed at the beginning of the year) build a LEGO robot to complete missions with LEGO models and work on an innovation project to solve a real-world challenge. Relies heavily on parent volunteers to serve as coaches, hosting twice weekly meetings in preparation for a challenge competition in December. Costs consist of registration and participation fee (secured a Rookie grant in 2022 to cover LEGO kits, which will be reused in subsequent years). Haisley is sending two teams of 10 to competition this year. For more information, visit: firstinspires.org.
Committee Coordinator: Lauren Salah
Coaches: Alex Kanous, Ben Wing, Burt Jarrett and the Celkises

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD (Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad/WESO)
A fun, educational opportunity to introduce the world of science to Haisley students, WESO is the largest annual elementary school Science Olympiad in the country. Every year 3,500 students from 35 Washtenaw County schools compete in various science events during a one-day competition in early June. All Haisley students in grades 2-5 are welcome to participate. Relies heavily on parent volunteers, who coach teams of 2-3 students in learning about a specific science topic over 3+ months, starting in late winter, and then apply their skills as they compete against other schools at the spring competition.
Committee Coordinators: Jim Carey, Shimul Bhuva
Coaches: WILL NEED PARENT VOLUNTEER COACHES STARTING IN JANUARY

GREEN TEAM/HAISLEY GARDEN (Fall, Spring, Summer)
Officially organized in 2012, the Green Team is a teacher-parent collaborative with an aim of fostering environmental awareness and promoting environmentally sustainable practices within the Haisley Community.
Started in 2013, the Haisley Garden (located between the parking lot and the lower elementary playground) is our community garden, full of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers due to the hard work of volunteer students/families. Produce grown is used for educational purposes, with the garden serving as an outdoor extension of the classroom to supplement curriculum. The Green Team partners with Haisley teachers to incorporate garden activities into their lessons, and facilitates additional educational opportunities throughout the year for students to learn and explore the garden through harvesting, tasting and preparing the produce – including Garden Club, Recess Gardening, Earth Day Projects, Class Planting, Try it Tuesdays, and the Summer Adoption Program.
Committee Coordinators: Becky Wong, with help from Megan Kanous (NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH GARDEN ACTIVITIES)
Teacher Lead: Kayla Evans
